Farewell to LDN

Versão em português depois da inglesa

I arrived here in 1998 for a sabbatical and first thing I fall in love with this country was the people’s manners. After 11 years, of course you got to know that there are various shades of grey, as the saying goes, but the English politeness is something I will carry with me back to my homeland. And another thing I will never forget is the reaction of people when they asked me where I came from. They would repeat my answer in an unusually unreserved, wholehearted turn of voice: `Brazzziiilll!!!`. This always made me feel privileged and welcome. I also would like to confess to my friends, relatives and acquaintances in Brazil – I became half English and this is part of my being now so you will have to get used to the `new` me. (This will give them a good motto to having a laugh).

To my eyes, England is a place immersed in paradoxes and this is probably the biggest challenge the country offers: reading it, understanding it without prejudice. Here you have probably the strongest and most conservative monarchy, but also the most intriguing, challenging, critical, controversial forms of art, do not matter if you are talking about fine art, music, film, acting, dancing, humour, performance or… you name it. To understand the whys of the still monarchy(parliamentary, though), you have to get to know English ordinary people and perceive how their history is engraved in their hearts. A history which they are so proud of.

Everybody, even the country’s most severe critics, are proud to be English. Something they usually will not make a fuss about – as we Brazilians do. You will never hear them saying this openly – more likely to hear them saying the opposite. English people are their worse critics and this is another thing I admire about them. They are not soft towards themselves and their country but they try, as hard as they can, to be the softest towards others. It is a principle they advocate. But even there lays another paradox – the country easily goes to war (as the controversial alliance with the US in the invasion of Iraq). On the other side of the spectrum, its citizens have created the largest and most influential independent organisation in human rights – Amnesty International, to name only one of so many NGOs that are in every inch of this kingdom.

The visual democracy – as my friend Camila Trajber names the fashion varied and eccentric style in London’s streets – is, however, much more pleasant and efficient than the political one. The mix of colours, the diversity of pieces and how these are put together is an art in itself. I will never forget a girl on her bikini-inspired plus high heels outfit, and a Muslim woman in full black hidden eye jilbab crossing their ways while strolling in Hyde Park. But you should mind your hair – it has to be well done, does not matter if in a punk-lime-purple shape or straight like a piece of flat shining wood. The hair should make a statement. And when in sandals no one can resist the tendency of having their toenails varnished in the brightest possible colour.

In spite of the crazy crowd in London’s high streets, you have just to get the first off road to feel like in a little 19th century village. And there are the parks, everywhere in London, sometimes three for each neighbourhood, wonderfully cared for.

England softened me, turned me into a less heavy character. (To be truly fair, this was the hard work of my husband and his irresistible charm and kindness that softens all around him). Here I also learned how an employee should be treated; what entrepreneurship really means; and how people can help each other in making their dreams come true.

I will miss all that and for these reasons I will always come back.

(Actually, this is not all just yet. I will also miss the weather, the one that everybody loves to hate. Specially that very first day of Winter, when I would go outside just after getting off bed, still in my pyjamas, just to feel the cold breeze. Simply cool!)

Bye Bye Londres

Cool !)
